Asphalt milling and paving removes that damaged layer and replaces it with fresh asphalt, restoring the surface without the cost and disruption of a full-depth rebuild.

What Asphalt Milling & Paving Involves
Asphalt milling and paving is a two-part process. First, a milling machine grinds off a controlled depth of the existing deteriorated surface using a rotating drum with cutting teeth. Then, once that layer is removed, fresh asphalt is placed over the milled surface to restore a smooth, properly graded driving surface.
The key advantage of this approach is that it leaves the aggregate base underneath untouched. If that base is still stable, milling and paving addresses the actual problem, cracked, rutted, or worn asphalt, without paying to rebuild a foundation that isn’t broken. It’s a different situation from new construction, where there’s no existing structure to work with, and a different situation from full-depth reconstruction, where the base itself has failed and needs to be rebuilt.

Our Process
- Pavement evaluation. We inspect the existing surface for cracking, rutting, and low spots, and we check whether the damage is surface-level or has reached the base. This step decides everything that follows, including whether milling is even the right call for your pavement.
- Setting milling depth. We determine how much material needs to come off. In some cases we mill uniformly across the whole surface. In others, we vary the depth in specific areas to correct drainage slope or grade problems that have developed over time.
- Milling. Our milling machine grinds the asphalt to the planned depth, loading the removed material for hauling. This step removes the cracked, worn, or rutted surface while leaving the aggregate base underneath intact.
- Surface cleaning and inspection. Once milling is complete, we clean loose debris from the milled surface and inspect it, checking that the exposed base looks sound and that grade corrections came out the way we planned.
- Overlay preparation. We prepare the milled surface for the new asphalt, making sure it will bond properly with the overlay rather than creating a weak seam between old and new material.
- Overlay paving and compaction. We place and compact the new asphalt surface over the milled area, restoring a smooth, properly graded driving surface without changing the pavement’s relationship to curbs, drains, or building entrances more than the plan calls for.
Warning Signs You Need Milling & Paving
- Surface cracking without deep structural damage. Widespread surface cracking that hasn’t progressed into alligator cracking or base failure is often a good candidate for milling rather than full reconstruction.
- A worn, smooth, or faded surface. Pavement that’s lost its texture and traction from years of traffic, but hasn’t developed rutting or potholes, can often be restored through milling and overlay.
- Uneven grade or minor ponding. Low spots that have developed over time can sometimes be corrected during milling by varying the depth to fix the slope, without a full rebuild.
- Elevation mismatches at curbs or entrances. When a surface has been overlaid multiple times and now sits too high against curbs or thresholds, milling brings it back down to the correct level before repaving.
- Multiple prior overlays. If a surface has already been resurfaced more than once and total asphalt thickness has become a problem, milling is often the next step before another overlay.
